Scholz in defense of the EU asylum agreement: To create a solidarity system for the distribution of refugees in Europe
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz today defended the agreement reached this week, which calls on EU member states to tighten the rules regarding the right to asylum, DPA reported.
"States need to stop blaming others and start feeling responsible," Scholz said in a statement at the 38th Congress of the German Protestant Church.
"That is why the agreement envisages the creation of a solidarity mechanism," he added to the crowd at the city's convention center.
According to him, "finally" a solidarity system should be created for the distribution of refugees in Europe.
Scholz promised faster asylum procedures as well as more digitized processes.
"However, countries must be prepared to deal with the return of people who do not have the right to remain in Europe," he added.
EU interior ministers reached an agreement on Thursday to tighten rules due to the rising number of migrants.
The agreement stipulates that the processing of the documents of persons seeking asylum shall be carried out in the reception centers at the external borders of the union.
