"People are likely to need to be vaccinated against Covid-19 in the years to come," Pfizer chief Dr Burla told the BBC.

He believes this will be necessary to maintain a "very high level of protection".

The UK has already provided an additional 114 million doses of Pfizer and Modern vaccines to be delivered over the next two years.

Burla made the statement to the BBC ahead of Omicron, first identified in South Africa, and before the announcement that the government in London had signed deals to buy 54 million additional Pfizer doses and 60 million doses of Modern for 2022 and 2023. .

The agreements include access to modified vaccines if needed to combat Omicron and future variants, the health ministry said.

Dr Burla noted that Pfizer has already made updated vaccines in response to the Beta strain, also identified for the first time in South Africa, and the Delta variant, first discovered in India.

The company is now working on an updated vaccine in response to the Omicron strain, which can be ready in 100 days.

Burla says the vaccines helped save millions of lives during the pandemic, and without them "the fundamental structure of our society would be jeopardized."

By the end of the year, Pfizer expects to deliver three billion doses of its vaccine and four billion are planned for next year.

Pfizer will generate at least $ 35 billion in sales of Covid-19 vaccines this year, and their share price is rising.
