CIA chief: Putin is dangerous when cornered

The US intelligence community is closely monitoring the war in Ukraine and Russian President Vladimir Putin. CIA chief William Burns spoke to CBS News about Putin. In the interview, Burns talked about whether Putin is concerned about the progress of the Ukrainian military and the fact that hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing Russia.

"He must be concerned, not only about what is happening on the battlefield in Ukraine, but also about what is happening at home and internationally. Last February, shortly before the start of the war, Putin stood by Chinese President Xi Jinping and declared that they were friends without borders. But it turns out that friendship still has limits," said the head of the CIA.

Barnes points out that China has not provided the military support that Putin had hoped for. Even so, Burns says, Putin remains "stubbornly convinced of his own assessments."

"Putin is dangerous and reckless when he feels stuck. Putin is basing his approach on false assumptions and thinking he can deal with Ukraine, the United States and the West," Burns said, adding that he believes Xi "is like a hawk watching what's going on in Ukraine."

Barnes believes that the Chinese president "sobered up" when he saw the poor performance of the Russian military. "The Chinese see that the Ukrainians are resisting with a lot of courage and persistence," says the CIA director.
