The Shar springs and the forest are under strict control, there are no new hydropower plants - What does the plan for the protection and development of Shar provide?

No more driving of motor vehicles in strictly protected zones, greater control of forest felling, which until now has mostly been in one's own hands, the end of the construction of new hydropower plants, regulation of the use of the Sharjah springs - these are only part of the programs of the ambitious ten-year plan for protection and development of Shar, prepared by the Shar Mountain National Park.

The plan has eight basic programs. The protection of the mountain area will now be a priority, and this will create conditions for the development of the mountain massif, according to the management of the institution.

"Motor vehicles entering the strictly protected zones will no longer be allowed, so far they have been moving all over Shara and now in order to protect the wildlife, of course it will have to be banned. The logging activities took place without obtaining a permit, the habits are like that. The data we have says that so far from 4% to 6% of people were supplied with wood pulp with a permit, and the rest was without a permit. In the meantime, we made a decision to lower the prices for the supply of wood pulp. Regarding the protection of the springs, of course we cooperate with other institutions with the ministries, which grant permits for the use of the springs, but we need to be on the ground and inform the institutions about the water situation. The hydropower plants, the ones that have been built now, will remain, but we received support from the new Minister of the Environment that we will not have any other hydropower plants, that is, no new ones will be built in protected areas. Our position is also for those who have received concessions, and not with all the buildings built, to stop the procedure, not to continue the construction actions. We will not give a positive opinion so that they continue to be built," says Ibrahim Dehari, director of NP "Shar Planina".

The development of Shar Mountain can only begin if conditions are created on the mountain where the deviant phenomena will stop. No one wants to hike through a mountain that is bare, where there is wild logging, the facility says. Tourism should be given priority, but its development should take place according to strict established rules.

"A few months ago, it was announced that the Popova Shapka Ski Center would be developed. All of this has been controlled by us and it has been established that this development is exclusively in the Buffer Zone and only here will the development of tourism take place. We hope that the cable car will be restored, to reduce the pressure on the mountain itself. There are other forms of alternative tourism, such as ecological forms of tourism, development of pastures, stay of tourists in local places, to leave economic benefit to the locals. Then there is horse riding, beekeeping, grazing, etc. In these few months, we have recorded great damage to the forests, the ecosystems have been degraded, we will have to work on improving the environment for tourists, so that they can enjoy these landscapes. That deforestation should be invisible to the naked eye. Waste is a big problem, in order to make Shara attractive and to get to the component – development of Shara, the space should be pleasing to the eye. Realistically, the population has nowhere to dispose of the waste, it will be necessary to work more intensively with the municipalities, so that the waste ends up somewhere else, not on the mountains and along the rivers. We are planning to clean up several locations, where we recorded large dumps, said Anela Panayotova, head of the nature protection department at NP "Shar Planina".

Currently, the entire Sharplan massif is guarded and controlled by eight people, as many as there are employees in the National Park.

Financially, the institution is maintained with the help of donors and the Government, and expects new hires during the year.
