Charles Michel calls for Russia to be stripped of its permanent seat on the UN Security Council
The President of the Council of Europe, Charles Michel, said today in New York that Russia should be suspended from membership in the UN Security Council.
- When a state with the status of a permanent member of the Security Council starts an unprovoked and unjust war, a war that has been condemned by the General Assembly, it should automatically be suspended by the Security Council, Michel said.
He pointed out that the right of veto within the Security Council should be an exception and not a rule, as it has been practiced lately, and he called for reforms in the UN.
China, the United States, France, Great Britain and Russia have permanent membership in the UN Security Council, with the right to veto resolutions.
The UN Security Council is the most powerful international body whose decisions are binding on the member states of the World Organization. According to the UN Charter, the Security Council bears "primary responsibility for maintaining peace and security in the world".
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenski on several occasions he demanded that the right of veto be taken away from Russia as long as the Russian aggression against Ukraine lasts.
