Seven children have died from the cold in Gaza since the start of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas

At least seven Palestinian children have died from the cold in the Gaza Strip since a ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas movement came into effect on January 19, Al Jazeera reported, citing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Previously, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini pointed to the critical situation in the enclave due to the winter cold and the decline in humanitarian supplies.

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), meanwhile, said that nearly one million Palestinians in Gaza lacked meaningful protection from the winter cold. According to the NRC, only 285.000 displaced people in Gaza had received basic shelter materials by the end of November, while about 945.000 people still needed assistance.

The replenishment of humanitarian supplies became possible after Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar's prime minister and foreign minister, announced on January 15 that Doha, Cairo and Washington had brokered a deal between Israel and Hamas to release hostages held in Gaza and declare a ceasefire in the enclave. The deal came into effect on January 19.
