The level of espionage during the Ukrainian crisis is the same as during the Cold War or even higher, said today the head of the German intelligence service Thomas Haldenwang.

Haldenwang, who heads the Federal Service for the Protection of the Constitutional Order (BfV), warned of an increased risk of sabotage in the context of the war in Ukraine.

He said Germany had uncovered a number of Russian spies who had been active in the country in recent years.

Haldenwang believes that "in a world of open hostility and drastic sanctions, the threshold of inhibition for espionage, sabotage and illegitimate influence will continue to fall."
