April 1 is marked as the Day of Archives and Archivists

Today is April 1 - the Day of Archives and Archivists. The state archive is a significant scientific-historical and cultural institution, which for the past 72 years has been a vital repository of historical records and documents that provide insight into the country's past.

-On January 23, 1950, the first General Law on State Archives in Yugoslavia was adopted, and then, on January 6, 1951, the National Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia adopted the Law on State Archives. In 1951, based on the Law on the State Archives of the Republic of Macedonia, on April 1 the State Archives of the Republic of Macedonia was established (since 1965 it has been called the Archive of Macedonia, since 2000 – the State Archive of the Republic of Macedonia, and since 2019 the State Archive of the Republic of North Macedonia). That is why we mark this day as the day of archives and archivists in this country. Apart from the central part, in the period 1951-1962 departments were opened in cities throughout the country: Skopje, Ohrid, Bitola, Prilep, Kumanovo, Veles, Shtip, Strumica and Tetovo, according to the announcement from the State Archives.

The State Archive is a member of several international organizations - the International Council on Archives (ICA) and the International Center for Archival Research (ICARUS).

The archive is responsible for collecting and preserving records of historical and cultural significance. It also hosts educational and educational activities, exhibitions, conferences and workshops to promote the study of history and to raise awareness of the importance of preserving historical documents.

The State Archives has started digitizing all the documents it owns. It is planned to digitize 25.000 documents, which will enable their greater protection and availability to all citizens as well as to the scientific public.

- On this day, we give recognition, respect and gratitude to archivists from all over the country for their contribution, for their tireless work to preserve the cultural and historical heritage of our country, as well as for their commitment to the protection of our heritage for future generations, say The State Archives
