The surge of emotions after sexual intercourse is not at all strange, but some physical symptoms may be a sign that it is time to visit a gynecologist.

Pain or nausea after sexual intercourse is much more common than thought and the symptoms should never be ignored.

– There is a very worrying and common misconception that feeling nauseous after intercourse is an indication that you have just successfully conceived a child. But according to expert medical opinion, this is not true and is physically impossible. It takes sperm more than five minutes to fertilize an egg - says the famous British doctor and founder of "Elite Aesthetics" Dr. Shirin Lahani and adds that there are a number of reasons that could be the reason.

Vasovagal syncope

One possibility is vasovagal syncope, which can occur when a partner penetrates very deeply into a woman and "hits" the cervix.

- The cervix is full of nerve endings. The vasovagal response occurs when the vagus nerve is stimulated, causing a lower heart rate and blood pressure. "That, in turn, can lead to nausea," said Dr. Lahani. You should also be aware that the cervix changes during the phases of the menstrual cycle, which means that you may be more or less sensitive during penetration. Vasovagal syncope is a sudden, short-term loss of consciousness due to hypoxia of the brain as a consequence of transiently reduced blood flow to the brain.

Dehydration

Are you one of those women who often comes home from work and realizes that they did not drink a single sip of water all day? That must be changed, as dehydration can cause many health problems. The feeling of nausea after sexual intercourse is one of them.

"Whether it's dehydration, nerves, or genuine anxiety, nausea after sex can be your body's way of telling you something's wrong," says Dr. Lakhani. Keep track of how much water you drink, and if you're feeling anxious, there are stress management programs and techniques you can try.

Endometriosis

If nausea after sex is accompanied by pain, it could be a sign of a more serious condition such as a urinary tract infection, polycystic ovaries or even endometriosis.

"It is not uncommon for women with the above conditions to experience painful intercourse, with other causes including cervical infections and fibroids. Be sure to see a doctor," advises Dr. Lakhani.

Mental health

It's likely that few associate mental health with the physical symptoms of nausea after sex, but, according to Dr. Lakhani, it's possible for a doctor to rule out potential physical triggers, reevaluate psychological ones, and refer you for further therapy.
