Only pepper is eternal: What is the shelf life of spices?
When preparing food, we usually wonder if we have the right spice for it, but we never wonder if it is still usable.
In fact, remember - when you reach for a bag of cinnamon, rosemary or oregano, you certainly do not think about when you opened it. It is important for you only to have the spice and that the recipe will not have to change.
Store spices for one year
However, spices also have a shelf life - we should not store them on the shelves for more than a year. This is especially true for ground spices, while, for example, cinnamon sticks or star anise can last much longer because their interior is not exposed to oxygen, which changes the taste and smell of the spices over time.
Store spices in a dark place
It is best to store spices in a dry and dark place, in airtight containers. Of course, even if you use one that has stood for a long time, it will not hurt your stomach, but your sense of smell and taste will not be fully enjoyed.
Unlimited shelf life
Vanilla has an unlimited shelf life, and you will need the spices in the original form for the longest time, which means unground (cloves, peppercorns) - up to four years.
This also applies to seeds (poppy seeds and sesame seeds should be replaced after two years), as well as extracts. The ground spices (turmeric, nutmeg, cinnamon) will last from 2 to 3 years. The herbs (parsley, basil…) are best used before the end of the third year.
