Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz Jr took pole position in thrilling qualifying for the British Grand Prix held in rainy conditions at the legendary Silverstone circuit.

Sainz took the pole position literally in the last seconds of qualifying, although at no point was he close to Verstappen and Leclerc, who had the best pace. This is also the first pole position for the Ferrari driver in his career.

In the final moments of the third qualifying session in which the top 10 drivers competed, Sainz clocked the lap that earned him pole position in 1:40.983 minutes, 72 hundredths faster than Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was third fastest, 0,315 seconds behind Sainz, while Red Bull's second driver Sergio Perez was fourth.

Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso, George Russell, Ganyu Zhou and Nicholas Latifi took the fifth to tenth place.

The British Grand Prix takes place on Sunday from 16:00.
