US bans red food dye because it causes cancer in mice
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Wednesday it is banning the use of Red No. 3, a synthetic dye that gives foods and beverages a bright cherry red color, because it has been linked to cancer in animals.

The dye is still used in the United States in thousands of food products, including candy, cereals, cherries in fruit cocktails, and strawberry-flavored milkshakes.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a food safety advocacy group, has asked the agency to phase out the dye by 2022. More than 9.200 food products contain the dye, including hundreds made by major food companies.
