Today, the United States introduced additional sanctions on the Russian private military company "Wagner", the Ministry of Finance announced.

The US Department of the Treasury has announced that it has designated the Wagner group as a "significant transnational criminal organization".

"Wagner personnel were engaged in serious criminal activities, including mass executions, rape, child abduction and physical abuse in the Central African Republic and Mali," the Ministry of Finance said in a statement.

The sanctions freeze any US assets Wagner may have and prohibit US citizens from providing funds, goods or services to the group.

The US Treasury Department also imposed additional sanctions on Wagner, accusing the group of being responsible for or complicit in the forced displacement of civilians and attacks on hospitals in the Central African Republic.

Washington has also named other entities it accuses of supporting the Wagner Group's military operations in Russia, including Russia-based Terra Tech Joint Stock Company and China's Changsha Tianyi Space Science and Technology Research Institute.

"Today's expanded sanctions on Wagner, as well as new sanctions on their associates and other companies that enable the Russian military complex, will further hamper Putin's ability to arm and equip his military machine," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said.
