U.S. officials say they have seized 36 domains on Iranian government-linked news websites that spread disinformation as part of a propaganda campaign.

According to the US Department of Justice, action was taken against 33 websites used by the Iranian Radio and Television Union and three other operated by the Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia.

The move comes amid rising tensions between the two countries, with Iranian President-elect Ibrahim Raisi on Monday canceling talks or a meeting with President Biden as the two nations discuss returning Tehran to a 2015 nuclear deal.

The ministry said the domains were owned by U.S. companies, but the sites had not been licensed by the U.S. government, "in violation of U.S. sanctions."
