The United States is sending $ 40 billion in aid to Ukraine
The US Senate has voted to approve a new $ 40 billion bill to provide military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. It is the largest emergency package ever for Ukraine.
The package brings the total US aid delivered to Ukraine to more than $ 50 billion, including $ 6 billion in security assistance, such as training, equipment, weapons and support.
The bill - which was passed by the House of Representatives with broad bipartisan support on May 10 - was expected to pass earlier this week but was blocked by Kentucky Republican Rand Paul over a dispute over spending oversight.
But Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell dismissed those concerns and told reporters that Congress has a "moral responsibility" to support "the self-defense of a sovereign democracy."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the aid package as "a significant contribution by the United States to restoring peace and security in Ukraine, Europe and the world."
