The United States of America has announced that it is ending its strategic partnership with Georgia following the government's decision to suspend accession negotiations with the European Union.

The move follows the decision by the pro-Russian Georgian Dream party to suspend EU accession negotiations, which US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller called "a betrayal of the Georgian constitution" in a post on the Xu platform.

"Georgian Dream's decision to suspend Georgia's EU accession process is contrary to the promise of the Georgian people contained in its constitution to pursue full integration into the European Union and NATO," the US State Department said in a statement.

"The Georgian people overwhelmingly support integration with Europe," he continued. "By suspending Georgia's EU accession process, the Georgian Dream rejected the possibility of closer ties with Europe and made Georgia vulnerable to the Kremlin.

The US also criticized the "excessive use of police force against Georgians seeking to exercise their right to assembly and expression, including freedom of peaceful protest."

The US described Georgian Dream's actions as "anti-democratic" and accused the party of undermining the core values of democracy, the rule of law and human rights. Tensions in Georgia have intensified in recent days.
