US: EU to impose tariffs on oil supplies from Russia
US Treasury officials said at a meeting of G7 finance ministers in Bonn starting tomorrow that EU countries would propose tariffs on oil supplies from Russia as a faster viable alternative to the idea of a full embargo on Russian oil.
According to US officials, the customs mechanism will maintain the presence of Russian oil on the market, but will limit Russia's export revenues. They believe that such a measure would have a faster effect than the planned ban on oil imports from Russia to the EU in 2023.
EU members have yet to reach an agreement on a sixth package of sanctions against Russia, including a draft oil embargo: The European Commission (EC) has proposed a ban on crude oil imports from Russia six months after the sixth package enters into force. At the same time, the European Commission has proposed that Hungary and Slovakia be allowed to buy Russian oil by the end of 2024.
According to "Bgnes", according to well-informed sources, the European Commission has already had to mitigate many of its proposals for the time, parameters and possible exceptions to the oil embargo. Hungary opposes the oil embargo, and is backed by a number of other countries, who say the damage would be catastrophic for Europe.
