Russia says it has captured the Ukrainian city of Toretsk

Russia announced today that it has captured the Ukrainian city of Toretsk in the eastern Donetsk region.

The Russian Federation's Ministry of Defense announced that Dzerzhinsk (the old Soviet name by which the city is known in Russia) in the "Donetsk People's Republic" has been "liberated."

There has been no reaction from Ukraine so far. At the end of last year, the Ukrainian army said the situation in Toretsk was difficult, with fighting taking place for literally every building.

The city, which had over 30.000 inhabitants before the war, is located in the Bakhmut region.
