Russia took over the presidency of the UN Security Council, for Kuleba it is the "worst April Fool's joke"
Russia has taken over the presidency of the UN Security Council despite Ukraine's appeal to members to block the Russian takeover, the BBC reported today.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called the Russian transfer "the worst April Fool's joke ever" and "a strong reminder that something is wrong with the way the international security architecture works."
Each of the 15 members of the UN Security Council presides over the body for one month on a rotating basis. The last time Russia chaired the Security Council was in February 2022, the month it launched its invasion of Ukraine.
That means the Security Council is led by a country whose president is under international arrest warrant for alleged war crimes after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin last month.
Despite Ukraine's objections, the US has said it will not block Russia, a permanent member of the Security Council, from assuming the presidency.
Permanent members of the Security Council are the United States, Great Britain, France, China and Russia.
The function is largely procedural, but Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vasil Nebenzia, told TASS that he plans to organize several discussions, including one on arms control.
He added that the "new world order" that will "replace the unipolar one" will also be discussed.
