Romania gets interim president

The leader of the centrist Liberal Party, Ilie Boloian, became Romania's interim president today, after the resignation of the country's current president, Klaus Iohannis, took effect.

Boloian, 55, who was the current president of the Senate, takes over from fellow centrist Klaus Iohannis, who resigned as president of Romania two days ago after opposition parties announced they would seek his impeachment.

Far-right lawmakers now plan to file a motion of no confidence in the broad coalition government, which has a narrow majority in parliament and includes Bolojan's Liberal Party, the "Reuters".

As interim president, Boloian will name a new prime minister if the current government falls. Iohannis's presidential term expired last year, and the November presidential election was annulled by a controversial ruling by the country's Constitutional Court in December, citing Russian interference. The court ordered a full rerun of the election process.
