Ristevski: We are not giving up on erasing old debts to ESM

To "freeze" the amount of interest, when it is equal to the amount of debt is the proposal of the Confederation of Trade Unions of Macedonia (KSOM), presented at the last session of the Economic and Social Council, which presented the fifth economic package.

Marjan Ristevski, President of KSOM for "Free Press", says that they insist on amending the Law on Obligations in the area of interest rates, which in the current solution allows free growth of interest rates and many times damages the citizens. Ristevski estimates that the cancellation of interest on debts to public enterprises at local and central level that are older than three months, is great news for citizens who will be able to pay the principal in 12 installments.

The President of KSOM reveals that there is a chance to delete the debts and interest rates on electricity bills from the old ESM, at least since 2006, when the company took over EVN. Ristevski reminds that in the past years, the citizens have been receiving unpaid electricity bills since 1995, with terrible interest rates ?! At the moment, over 180 thousand citizens' accounts are blocked.

- The Law on Obligations regarding the interest rates must be changed and they must not be allowed to enormously increase the debts. The proposal for writing off the interest for the debts from the Fifth Package will help the citizens - Ristevski is decisive.

When asked what will happen if the company owed to the citizen has already given the case to an enforcement agent, Ristevski explains that in that case the enforcement agent will not be allowed to charge interest costs.

- The cost list of the enforcement agents is a public document and they will not be allowed to charge for the interest on the debts, because they will be deleted. We struggled for years and finally managed to reduce enforcement costs - Ristevski explains for "Free Press".
