Regional Director of the World Health Organization for Europe, Hans Kluge said today he was concerned that the spread of measles could accelerate in the region as people gather for parties and festivals during the summer months.

"As we enter the summer season in the European region, with mass gatherings, festivals and parties, I am concerned that the transmission may be accelerated as cases of sexually active people are currently being detected and the symptoms are unknown to many," Kluge said.

"Hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene, along with personal protective equipment and adequate isolation of suspected and confirmed cases, are also key to reducing transmission to health facilities - measures we have all followed for covid-19," the WHO Regional Director for Europe.
