The number of victims of typhoon Yagi in Vietnam is growing, 127 people died, 54 are missing
The death toll from Typhoon Yagi and the accompanying heavy rains that caused floods and landslides in Vietnam has reached 127. Additionally, 54 people are missing and 764 are injured.
Yagi was the most powerful typhoon to hit Vietnam in decades, packing winds of 149 km/h. It reached the coast of Vietnam on Saturday and caused the deaths of nine people. Although it weakened on Sunday, the rains continued.
Vietnam's state broadcaster VTV reported that 127 people were confirmed dead, while 54 were missing. Most of the victims died in torrents and landslides.
Water levels in several rivers, including the Red River, which flows through the capital Hanoi, are dangerously high. The authorities evacuated families living near the river today.
One of the hardest-hit provinces is Caobang, where 19 people have died and 36 are missing due to landslides in the hilly region.
Rescue operations continue in all affected regions, where a large number of infrastructure facilities have been damaged and many families have been left without shelter.
