Kazakh President Kasim-Jomart Tokayev dissolved the Lower House of Parliament and called early elections for March 19, his office said.

Tokaev has announced he will dissolve the parliament, elected in 2021, after taking power from the country's longtime leader Nursultan Nazarbayev last year and implementing constitutional reforms.

Kazakhstan has had no real opposition parties in parliament for decades, and although party registration rules were eased under Tokaev, parliament is likely to remain strongly pro-government. Last year, Tokaev resigned from the Amanat party, which dominates parliament, and promised not to interfere in party politics.
