The break-up of Yugoslavia was the most terrible defeat of civilization

The death of Gjorgje Balasevic reminded us of all the good things we lost with the break-up of Yugoslavia. But these days we have learned that the former state has not been disintegrated, that is, that it still needs to disintegrate, even though decades of bloody wars have been fought on its territory.

We will probably never know for sure whether Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa really sent a non-paper to EU Council President Charles Michel proposing the "final break-up" of Yugoslavia, but the fact is that similar non-papers are constantly circulating and are released into the air as "test balloons" to feel the pulse in the centers of power.

Specifically for Jansa's non-paper, although no one has seen it, it is claimed that it describes the need for the division of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also the redrawing of the borders of Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo. Allegedly, this redrawing of the borders will bring peace and stability to the entire Balkans, it was stated in the informal document that the Prime Minister of Slovenia sent to the President of the EU Council. If I ever get a chance, I would ask Jansa or someone like him, how many times does Yugoslavia have to fall apart to ensure peace and stability? I would like to add just one more historical fact - the region was peaceful, stable and prosperous only during the time of Yugoslavia.

And it does not matter in the end whether Jansa sent the non-paper, because since the 90s of the last century, it is constantly calculated with the formation of national, ie "clean" states in the Balkans, which would avoid any new international conflicts in the future. In fact, only two years ago, secret negotiations were held between Serbia and Kosovo for "correction of the borders", which was again explained with a kind of non-paper.

Nikola Dimitrov, Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs, told Jansa about the alleged non-paper that if the border debate starts, it will be a defeat for civilization. Dimitrov is right, although in my opinion the greatest defeat of civilization was experienced when Yugoslavia disintegrated. When in Slovenia, Jansa, as Minister of Defense, started the "fake" war with the generals of the Yugoslav People's Army, which was fought under the motto - they are ostensibly attacking us, and we are ostensibly defending ourselves. Even then, there was open talk about the non-paper agreement between the leaders of Slovenia and Serbia, Milan Kucan and Slobodan Milosevic, about the "small war" that the Slovenes should "take out" of the SFRY.

No, I do not think that the federation should have been maintained at any cost, but if it was impossible to save the community, then the disintegration should have taken place peacefully, without wars, massacres and crimes. Probably more and more honest negotiations were needed, and the international community should have taken a different position in order to avoid bloodshed.

The same thing should happen now. Dialogue is necessary and more than necessary to avoid all the burning issues faced by non-paper countries. With a due note that we are not sure if such a document really exists, what was written in the letter that no one saw scared all well-meaning people from Gevgelija to Sezana.
