A watch claimed to have belonged to Adolf Hitler was sold for $1,1 million at an auction in the United States. The Huber watch was sold to an anonymous bidder and has a swastika and is engraved with the initials AH.

Jewish leaders condemned the auction before Alexander Historical Auctions in Maryland. However, the auction house, which has sold Nazi memorabilia in the past, told German media that its goal is to preserve history.

The watch was a birthday present

Adolf Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1945, and under his armed aggression, over 11 million people were systematically murdered, six million of them just because they were Jewish.

The catalog in which the watch is presented states that it was probably given to Hitler as a birthday present in 1933, the year he became German Chancellor.

The auction house also states that the watch was taken as a souvenir when about 30 French soldiers stormed the Berghof, Hitler's mountain retreat, in May 1945. At the time, the watch was thought to have been resold and passed down from generation to generation.

A dress by Eva Braun was also found at the auction

Other items up for auction included a dress belonging to Hitler's favorite Eva Braun, autographed pictures of Nazi officials and a yellow cloth emblazoned with the word Jew. During the Holocaust, the Nazis forced Jews to wear yellow markers such as ribbons or badges with the intention of isolating and harassing them.

An open letter signed by 34 Jewish leaders described the sale as "disgusting" and demanded that the Nazi items be withdrawn from the auction.
