He worked as a waiter to survive, and today he will make his debut at the European Championship

Football knows how to write incredible stories, and that is exactly the story of the Slovak national team player. Vernon De Marco.

The 31-year-old De Marco will debut today at a European Championship, but his football path was not easy at all.

Even as a child, De Marco left his native Argentina and moved to Austria, where he took his first football steps, but initially trained in basketball.

"Until I was 12 years old, I coached basketball, then I decided to try my hand at football, and obviously I was not wrong," said De Marco.

At the beginning of his career, in the days when he was of age, he had to work as a waiter in a hotel to survive, his salary from football as a member of Constantia was only 225 euros.

"In Mallorca I played for Constancia of the fourth division and I had a salary of 225 euros a month, it was not even enough for gas. "I had to do something else, so I found a second job in a hotel in Mallorca."

His career took a turn for the better in 2012 when he received a call from his agent.

"I remember well, it was 2012 and that phone call changed my life. Around 23 pm I was in the cinema when my agent asked me and offered me a move to the second league in Slovakia. Honestly, I didn't know where Slovakia was at that time and I was looking for it on a map. I thought for a while and then I accepted, it was the best decision I've ever made," admits De Marco.

The first club he played for in Slovakia was Zemplin Michalovce and he stayed here until 2016, followed by a transfer to Slovan Bratislava from where he signed for Lech from Poland, to return to Slovan in 2021. In 2021, he also received Slovakian citizenship.
