Putin has approved people over the age of 40 to join the Russian military

The Russian president Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin signed a law allowing persons older than 40 years to enlist in the army of the Russian Federation.

Russia has lifted the age limit for professional soldiers, opening up the possibility of recruiting more civilian experts, including medics, engineers and military operations and communications specialists for the Ukraine conflict.

Previously, Russian citizens aged 18 to 40 and foreign nationals aged 18 to 30 could join the Russian army.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has previously said that conscripts who joined the army this spring would not be sent to any battlefield.

Recruitment in Russia, which dates back to the time of the empire, obliges men aged 18 to 27 to serve in the army for one year.

Russia now has more than 400.000 professional troops in the active armed forces, numbering a total of 900.000 troops and can mobilize about two million reservists, Tanjug reported.

The Ukrainian army is much smaller, with an estimated 200.000 active-duty troops and 900.000 reservists, although that number has increased through mass mobilization.
