Putin: We will deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus
Following Britain's announcement to supply Ukraine with depleted uranium ammunition, Moscow and Minsk have agreed to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with the Rossiya 24 TV channel. He says the construction of the storage facility will be completed on July 1.
"The depleted uranium ammunition that the West will transfer to Kiev does not belong to weapons of mass destruction, but it somehow creates radioactive dust and is therefore considered very dangerous. "Inevitably, there will be contamination of the sown areas, which will create a danger for both the local population and the environment," Putin said.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly raised the issue of threats posed to his nation by nuclear weapons deployed by the US in EU countries.
Minsk should take "appropriate measures" to deal with this threat, Lukashenko said at the time, adding that he would discuss the matter with Moscow.
