Psychologist Veleski: Society is depressed, new mental health phenomena are emerging

psychologist Jovan Velevski (MIA)

About 50 percent of the problems and questions in the psychological clinic are about the new stresses, states the clinical psychologist from the Prilep hospital Jovan Veleski. We live in difficult post-covid times burdened by economic crisis and displaced values. Depression is imposed not only on the individual, the citizen, but also on the whole society, which is called enomy.

According to Veleski, the new generations have less opportunity for adaptation. New mental health phenomena are emerging. Half of the questions of citizens seeking psychological help are about new stresses.

- We had a prolonged period of transition for three decades, but one of the biggest stresses is the pandemic and all the changes that followed with her – vaccinations, new systems of living, new systems of communication, of learning. All that led to new rules of life, which in turn dictate new adaptation. The general adaptation syndrome in humans appears just then so that man can as an individual to survive, to manage in those flows. Currently, I can say that some new phenomena of change in mental health are appearing, because the resistance to stress in the new generations has changed - says the psychologist Veleski.

Veleski points to a recently published study in which the generation-in-law, which is the generation born from 1995 to 2000 year, has a different understanding of life, with less ability to adapt and less ability to solve practical life problems. This means that the ego of each individual is structured more.

- The values of our society have been defaced. They have come to some other level where real qualities - morality, honesty, acceptance of responsibility - no longer have meaning, because people who are they successful in this society do not have those qualities and the young people of that "son-in-law generation" are looking for a way as to fit into this system to succeed. The ambitious intellectuals are leaving the country, the hardworking ones who want another system. Those who want to stay have another problem, and that is – as to deal with people who have increasingly less responsible, lesser qualities, and want to be in higher positions and enjoy greater benefits. Overall, the characteristics of this generation is what they don't like a lot of communication, they don't like a lot of marital obligations and responsibility in relationships. They want to work, mostly from home, their sleep rhythm is disturbed and changed. If they were to go out into the environment where there is more dynamics of movement and activities, they find themselves under stress or they don't know as to react. Mostly, such problems arise in the doctor's office. About 50 percent are new stresses, while the rest are consequences of transition stresses. The current situation with medical psychology and mental health in Prilep is one that requires a completely different approach and a different orientation in order to respond to the needs of the citizens - concludes clinical psychologist Jovan Veleski.

Enomy or the kind of depressed state of the whole society has its reasons. The abandonment of real values, but also the great partisanship of society.

– One enomy is noticeable. When society has the same reaction mechanisms as and every individual, because society also falls into depression, that is enomy. We would say collective depression. There is an old Jewish rule that says, "If I am not better, I will be worse." It means that every day we need to progress to a certain extent, to strengthen our personality structure, our security, responsibility, value, physical fitness. If we fail to do that, then we go in another direction. In that assembly is the material part, as economic, existential needs. But as we came as society to this level, in a collective enomy and is the disturbed value system the main cause? They are the laws of social pathology. Every society suffocates in its own priorities. It's not just our society. And this modernist concept of living, due to the lack of an adequate balance, cannot come to the fore. It is in question everywhere in the world. People already live in some other dimensions, different from the ones we know before. It is further away from nature, from the native structure. We live in a world that gives greater illusion - believes clinical psychologist Veleski.

Veleski assures that he is not a pessimist, but society needs a lot to get out of economy, to offer security to every individual.

- I do not believe that this problem will be solved quickly. At least our society does not have the capacity. The problem can be solved if there is some awareness. Nor, for example, can Sweden immediately cope with the problems of the new age. And with us, the problems are of a banal nature. I am not a pessimist, but the current situation calls for greater social action of structures that will not imply lobby groups, especially not marginal lobby groups. They should mean lobby groups who are they quality that will offer real values. And that takes a lot of time - believes Jovan Veleski, a clinical psychologist at the Prilep hospital
