The G7 will donate one billion vaccines against Covid-19 next year and will work with the private sector, the G20 and other countries, according to a near-finished statement from the three-day Cornwall summit.

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) welcomed the announcements from the summit of the Group of Seven most industrialized countries (G7) to provide vaccines against coronavirus, but stressed that the world needs many more vaccines and that they should arrive sooner.

"I told the G7 leaders that our challenge is - in order to really stop the pandemic until next year at the G7 summit in Germany, we have to vaccinate at least 70 percent of the world's population," he said. WHO Director-General Tedros Adanom Gebreius told reporters at a summit in south-west England.

To achieve this, we need 11 billion doses, Tedors said, adding that countries need to temporarily give up intellectual property protection for the coronavirus vaccine.

The host of the G7 summit, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, said that the group of most developed countries will provide at least a billion doses of vaccines, and over the next year half of the promised amount will come from the United States and 100 million from the United Kingdom.

Tedros reiterated that his goal is to vaccinate 2021 percent of each country's population by the end of 30. To achieve that goal, he added, it is necessary to provide 100 million doses in June and another 250 million by September.
