The first Honduran diplomat left for China to establish diplomatic relations
Honduran Foreign Minister Enrique Reyna left for China in order to establish diplomatic relations with Beijing. The information about the visit was confirmed by two sources close to the presidential cabinet.
"The minister traveled there. . . on the instructions of President Xiomara Castro," Rodolfo Pastor, who holds a ministerial post in the President's Cabinet and is in charge of the government's relations with the head of state, told the local daily newspaper.
On March 14, this Central American country announced through the president that it will establish formal relations with the People's Republic of China. The decision was immediately welcomed by Beijing, but threatens Honduras' ties with Taiwan.
Central America has been the arena of diplomatic rivalry between Beijing and Taipei since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.
In recent years, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica have severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan in favor of Beijing.
