Protest in Belgrade: Traffic blocked in several locations, for the authorities an illegal move and harassment of citizens
The protest due to the announcement of the opening of a mine for a lithium project called "Jadar" by the mining company "Rio Tinto" started shortly after 19 pm in Belgrade, organized by environmental associations from Serbia.
However, a part of the citizens who came out to express their revolt stormed the main railway station in Belgrade, Prokop.
They blocked the railway and unfurled a large flag of Serbia. So far, everything is going on without incident.
The group gathered at the main train station says they have received information that a large police convoy is heading towards the train station in New Belgrade.
"If one stick is raised, we will go along the railway to the Novi Beograd railway station." If they use force, we will too," activist Ivan Bijelić from the informal group of students and youth "Borba" told "N1". He added that this is a message to all those in power, including Ivica Dacic.
"The people who are most threatened by this project have asked for a law to be passed to permanently stop the exploitation of lithium and boron in Serbia. And they said, if that doesn't happen, we will go to blockades. That blockade starts tonight on the railways of Serbia", announced the activist Nikola Ristic.
He added that the railways of Serbia have been informed and that the traffic is blocked.
The second group from the protest arrived at the station in New Belgrade. They announced that they will also block the railway.
The organizer of the protest, Zlatko Kokanovic, said that the two blocked railway stations were chosen as the only two points of railway traffic in Belgrade.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Goran Vesic, said that the ministry ordered the railway lines from Novi Sad to Belgrade to be shortened to the Zemun railway station in order not to endanger the safety of passengers using the trains.
Vesic announced this after the participants of the protest against the lithium mining announcement and the Rio Tinto company blocked the Prokop and Novi Beograd railway stations and announced that lawsuits for damages would be filed against the participants in the blockade.
He said that a group of hooligans forcibly blocked the Prokop and Novi Beograd railway stations tonight, which interrupted regular railway traffic.
- For tomorrow, 60 train departures are planned from Prokop Railway Station and about 10.000 passengers are expected. If the hooligans continue to block these train stations, all planned departures will have to be canceled, and the citizens who bought tickets for tomorrow's departures will not be able to travel - wrote Vesic on Instagram.
The minister appealed to end the railway blockades and stated that President Aleksandar Vucic and the Government have put a lot of effort into the construction of the Prokop Railway Station, as well as the reconstruction of the Novi Belgrade railway station, as well as the construction of a high-speed railway to Novi Sad.
Vucic called a meeting due to the protest against lithium mining
