The parents of 15-year-old Ethan Crambley from Michigan accused of killing four high school classmates have been detained after the media reported on Friday that they were on the run.

Authorities launched a search for James and Jennifer Campbell after investigators charged them Friday with manslaughter. The parents allegedly bought the weapon as a Christmas present for their son and ignored the signals that a massacre might follow. Detroit police announced on Saturday that they had arrested them and that they had tried to escape.

The couple's lawyers had previously said they were not on the run, adding that they had fled for security reasons immediately after the shooting in which their son Ethan killed four students.

"They are returning to the region to surrender. They are not running away from the authorities, as the media report, the lawyers say.

Cramble's car was found in Detroit, about 60 miles (XNUMX km) from the high school where the massacre took place.

Ethan Crumble killed four students and wounded seven others at a high school in Oxford, a small town about 60 miles (XNUMX km) from Detroit, Michigan. The teenager carried out the massacre with a semi-automatic pistol that he and his father had bought a few days earlier.

Ethan posted photos of the gun on social media, writing "I just got a new beauty". The next day his mother posted a photo with the sentence "we are trying out the new Christmas present".

The boy's teacher caught Ethan searching for ammunition on his cell phone on November 21st. His mother later wrote to him "lol, I'm not angry with you. "You have to learn not to get caught."

On the day of the massacre, the teacher also discovered Ethan's drawings of a gun, a bullet and a bleeding face, with the words "blood everywhere", "my life is useless" and "thoughts do not stop - help me".

The parents were therefore called to the school and instructed to take Ethan to a psychologist within the next 48 hours, but they resisted. After leaving school, Ethan returned to school and carried out the attack.

James and Jennifer Crumble were charged with four counts Friday, three days after their 15-year-old son opened fire on an Oxford high school. James Crumbley took Ethan with him when he bought the gun Ethan had brought to school four days before the attack, prosecutors said.

When he heard reports of a shooting at the school, James Cramble immediately returned home from work to look for the gun, but did not find it. Crumble then called police and said he suspected his son was the attacker at the school.

Charges are rarely filed against parents for school shootings. Unlike some states, Michigan law does not require gun owners to keep their guns in a safe place out of the reach of children.
