The Democratic-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed a law regulating the right to abortion at the federal level, as many Republican states tightened abortion laws, and Texas banned it almost entirely. According to Reuters, the bill is unlikely to pass the Senate.

The House of Representatives passed the Law on Women's Health Protection with 218 votes in favor and 211 against. Lawmakers voted along party lines, so only one Democrat was against the bill.

The Democratic proposal would allow abortion and prevent many of the restrictions Republicans have imposed on multiple states, such as mandatory ultrasound scans and other tests.

The bill is expected to fall to the Senate, which has 50 Republican and 50 Democratic lawmakers. The Democratic proposal must be supported by at least 10 Republicans.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who supports the right to abortion, said she would vote against the proposal. But the vote is an opportunity for Republicans to demonstrate their commitment to their policies ahead of the 2022 congressional election. Those elections will determine who will control Congress in the second half of Biden's term.

"It's time to trust women, to respect their decisions." said Democratic MP Rosa De Lauro in the debate.
