TURNING | Jakub Parusinski: The US currently looks like an adversary to its former allies
Russia is currently in a much worse situation on the front compared to 2022, 2023 and 2024. The capabilities of the Russian army have been significantly reduced in terms of those Soviet stockpiles of weapons, tanks and shells that are already drying up. The economy is at a record low, and the country itself is becoming weaker and weaker. That is why Ukraine currently needs all the Western help in every sense, and the longer Kiev can hold out in the conflict, the better the chances will be for its positioning at the negotiating table. This was emphasized, among other things, by Jakub Parusinski, a long-time journalist, editor and director at "Kyiv Independent", the intelligence and research department, in an exclusive interview for Free Press.

– Obviously, the dispute between Zelensky and Trump and his administration in Washington is a serious challenge for Ukraine. Although the United States is among the largest suppliers of military aid to Ukraine, it is not as Trump wants to present it to the public. If we take the numbers and the different types of military equipment donated to Ukraine into account, we will see that most of the aid belongs to or comes from Europe, rather than from America. However, American military aid is easily sustainable, logistically simpler, and all this suggests that any conflict between America and Ukraine is negative for our country. But at the same time, it is important to emphasize that the Ukrainian army is more efficient and professional than at the beginning of the Russian invasion – says Ukrainian journalist Parusinsky.
He adds that this is not the only time that American aid to Ukraine has been stopped. On the contrary, the Ukrainian journalist points out that this has happened on several occasions in the past, and the Ukrainian army has handled it well enough.
– Every action taken by Trump since the beginning of his term in the previous six weeks has somehow been aimed at undermining the positions of Ukraine and Europe, while sowing additional divisions throughout the EU. This is seen through the arrival of American politicians in Europe, where with their statements and support for anti-systemic, pro-Russian right-wing parties they are destroying the previous foreign policy of unitarity in Europe. All this is negative for Europe itself, Ukraine, but also for transatlantic relations, where these steps clearly indicate that the United States currently looks like opponents of its former allies – Parusinsky assesses.
In the interview, he spoke about what the interruption of intelligence information between Ukraine and the United States means, why Trump has prioritized Russia over Ukraine since the beginning of his term, how peace negotiations between Kiev and Moscow are expected to begin with Washington's mediation, and how "easy" the peace agreement that will eventually be reached between the warring parties will be in reality.
– Getting into Trump’s mind and thinking is always “difficult”. Regarding the return of American support for Ukraine, on a practical level, Ukrainians understand the dependence, but also the importance of American support. We want to maintain the trust and support that we have received so far from the United States, especially the assistance from satellites, intelligence information. However, there is no way to restore the American-Ukrainian trust that Trump has broken, and which was created over the past six weeks – explains the journalist of the “Kyiv Independent”, Parusinsky and points out that you can hardly trust someone who once turns off the “trust” “button”.
