Eight people were killed and thousands were evacuated, including tourists, in a forest fire in southwestern Turkey.

A forest fire has engulfed a thermal power plant in southwestern Turkey, a local official said tonight.

"The fire broke out at the power plant," Milas Mayor Muhamet Tokat wrote on Twitter.

He added that the thermal power plant has been completely evacuated.

Earlier, the fire in this area was brought under control, but it flared up again.

Turkish authorities say more than 150 forest fires broke out in the southwest of the country last week due to high summer temperatures, low humidity and strong winds.
