The first case of omicron strain of coronavirus has been confirmed in Croatia, writes 24.sata.hr.

According to reports, the sample was taken at a private clinic in Zagreb. A foreign worker from South Africa, who was at a professional meeting in Zagreb, was allegedly tested.

The information was confirmed by the Ruѓer Boковиkovi Ин Institute.

- The person who did the test expressed suspicion of the possibility of infection with a new variant of the coronavirus omicron, due to contact with a person from the Republic of South Africa. The sample is sent for further processing. PCR analysis showed some deviations from other variants of the coronavirus, writes in the statement.

- Target analysis by sequencing the key regions of the SARS-CoV-2 genome showed the presence of mutations characteristic of the new SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant. The Croatian Institute of Public Health and the Ministry of Health have been informed about the results, so their official confirmation is awaited. Also note that it takes 72 hours to get the final sequencing result. The Croatian Institute of Public Health will inform the public about the final results in a timely manner, it is added in the announcement.
