The President of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Carlo Doglioni, said today that the movement of the tectonic plates that caused the earthquake in Turkey moved the territory of that country by three meters.
"What we call the Arabian plate has moved three meters in a northeast-southwest direction relative to the Anatolian plate," Doglioni said, adding that there is a displacement of three meters over a length of about 160 kilometers, reported the Daily Mail.
The death toll in the series of strong earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria exceeded 7.200, over 25.000 people were injured, and according to the authorities' estimates, more than 23 million people in both countries will be affected by the consequences of the natural disaster.
