Former Albanian mayor arrested in Italy for 20kg of cocaine
The former mayor of the Albanian town of Vora, near Tirana, Agim Kajmaku, was arrested by Italian police on charges of drug production and sale.
Kajmaku was arrested on May 27, after 20 kilograms of cocaine were found in his possession in Dan Benedetto del Tronto, together with his nephew. The seized drugs on the market reach a value of one million euros, reports Top Channel.
Before being elected mayor, from the ranks of the ruling Socialists, he owned the company "Kajmaku" and was engaged in growing seedlings, seeds and the purchase of scrap metal.
He was elected mayor in the local elections on June 30, 2019, and in November of the same year, in his absence, a court in Tirana remanded him in custody on charges of forging official documents.
The Central Election Commission has revoked his mandate following accusations by the opposition Democratic Party of covering up his criminal past in Greece, where he was arrested, charged and convicted in absentia, identified as Jorgo Tota, of using counterfeit banknotes.
He fled the country while waiting for a response from the Greek authorities.
