"Politico": Grenell turned down Trump for director of national intelligence
The former director of the US National Intelligence Service, Richard Grenell, has rejected the offer of the newly elected US President Donald Trump to take the post again, reported the US website "Politico", citing sources.
Despite his attempts to become secretary of state, including the support of conservative social media influencers, Trump has reportedly chosen Senator Marco Rubio for the job, according to reports.
Grenell, known for his loyalty to Trump, remains a close aide, and sources say he could be offered another top position if he decides to accept it.
During Trump's last campaign rally in Michigan, Trump praised Grenell, noting his contribution as ambassador to Germany and special envoy for relations between Belgrade and Pristina, reports Tanjug.
"Although he was a key ally of Trump's campaign, his reputation as a 'tough guy' and foreign business ties, including projects in Belgrade, were seen as potential obstacles to his appointment as secretary of state," Politico reports.
