Political crisis in Romania: Far-right demands impeachment of President Ioannis

Three Romanian far-right parties have begun a process to impeach President Klaus Iohannis, whose term ended a month ago but will remain in office until May due to the annulment of the presidential election.

Parliament extended Ioannis' mandate after the Constitutional Court annulled the election in which little-known pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu won the first round on November 24. The elections will be repeated on May 4 and 18.

The three right-wing parties, which together hold 35 percent of the seats in parliament, have filed a motion to impeach Ioannis, which is unlikely to be passed by a majority in parliament.

In parallel with their initiative, protests of several thousand people are being held in front of the Constitutional Court in Bucharest, demanding that the results of the first round of the presidential elections be recognized.
