Police in Kentucky are searching for a gunman who wounded 7 people in a freeway shooting
Police in Kentucky are searching rugged terrain near a national forest for a suspect who opened fire and wounded at least seven people in vehicles on an interstate highway, officials said.
The incident happened around 18 p.m. local time, and police were notified of shots fired at multiple vehicles on Interstate 75 near the town of London in Laurel County. According to local media, the shots came from a wooded area or from an overpass.
Randall Weddle, the mayor of London, a small town of about 8.000 near the Daniel Boone National Forest, about 145 miles (XNUMX km) south of Lexington, said on Facebook that seven people were injured, including some who had been shot. He said that there are no deaths so far. Police did not provide further details on the number or nature of the injuries.
Weddle asked everyone in the area to "keep their doors locked" while the suspect is at large.
A section of the highway near the scene of the Kentucky shooting was closed but later reopened, although the suspect is still on the run.
Local police released a black-and-white photo of 32-year-old white man Joseph A. Couch, a "person of interest" who is believed to be armed and dangerous, and asked anyone with any information about his whereabouts to notify police.
