Police in the US state of Ohio killed an African-American man, Jayland Walker (25), by firing a dozen bullets into him as he tried to run away, the lawyer for the family of the murdered man said.

The lawyer referred to the police recording, which should be released tomorrow.

Officials said the incident began when officers tried to pull Walker over for a traffic violation while he was driving the car early Monday morning.

Walker fled, and Akron police said officers reported a gun had been fired from the suspect's vehicle.

After several minutes, Walker got out of the vehicle and began to run as officers chased him and fired at him, stating that he posed a deadly threat, according to a police statement released Tuesday.

Walker was killed in a parking lot.

In today's commentary published in the "Akron Becom Journal", lawyer Bobby DiCello described the video material as brutal and said that Walker's relatives were worried that the protests scheduled for tomorrow could turn violent, the British media reported.

It is the latest in a series of police killings of African-Americans in the US that critics say are unjustified, including the 2020 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, which sparked global protests against police brutality.

We are all preparing for the community response and the only message we have is that the family does not need any more violence, Disello said.

Akron police said Walker fired a gun at the officers who were chasing him and plan to release body camera footage of the officers at a news conference tomorrow, hours before the protest march.
