Poetry book "House of Paper" by Gordana Karakashevska: For me everything is poetry

On Thursday, May 12, the book "House of Paper" by Gordana Karakashevska, published by "PNV Publications", was promoted at the Cultural Information Center (KIC) in Skopje.

The poet Gordana Karakashevska explores "the duality between light and darkness, certainty and doubt, memories and forgetfulness, but also the contrasts between clarity and vague memories, and finally, she writes about death as the physical end of all life."

- Poetry has a privileged place in my life. For me, everything is poetry. The source of poetry is the human heart. After my first collection of poems "Broken Poet and Other Poems", quite naturally, even inevitably, the songs from "House of Paper" began to appear. Songs are born of pain. Hence, the theme that is found in all the songs, in the first place is the theme of the transience of time, and thus of human life, the theme of separation, the theme of waiting and the theme of loneliness. Poetry is the art of the subtle. Life is bigger than poetry, but poetry lives longer than life. I have been writing songs for the last three or four years and some of them are dedicated to my mother, who died in 2018, talking about the loss and emptiness that remains after death and the physical distance from my father. Therefore, "Paper House" is dedicated to my father, with love and gratitude - said Karakashevska.

Empathy, kindness and compassion for other people in everyday life is a priority for me

By the way, she has published collections of poetry and short stories, as well as a novel, and in that context we asked her what kind of world she wants to live in as an author.

- Empathy, kindness and compassion with other people in everyday life is a priority for me. All my life I have been guided by the maxim: "Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you", I believe in that, I believe that good returns. I would like to live in a world where the awareness of people, the awareness of other people, the animals, the nature and the environment will be at a much higher level. "I want us to leave a better world for future generations, I want us to be a good example, to learn from us, only then will they believe in goodness," she said.

- My intimate struggle is criticism and self-criticism complemented by questions, uncertainty and doubt in everything, but not in a negative connotation, but as an inspiration that leads to a new, creative process. In the end, I do not have a point, but always a question - Why?

In Karakashevska's life, the love for painting and poetry are intertwined

Apart from Macedonian, Karakashevska also writes in Italian, Serbian and English.

- The Italian language is melodic and has a beautiful composition, which comes from the perfect balance between soft and hard voices, it is passionate and seductive and wins your heart when listening. English has a very large vocabulary and I can easily express myself and achieve the desired effect. Serbian is a Slavic language, words are spelled as they are pronounced, and each letter represents a voice. But, most often I write in my mother tongue, in Macedonian I can express myself best - the author emphasizes.

She adds that writing is not her only interest.

- Between art, here I mean specifically painting, and literature - writing, I could not and did not want to choose. In my life they intertwine and complement each other. From an early age, I perceived art as a whole as something that is important to remember, as something that remains preserved for future generations. The influence of painting in poetry and vice versa, of poetry in painting is evident in my works but also the tendency to create my own stamp and upgrade the artistic and poetic experience is obvious. I also love photography. For me it is a contemporary art that requires a creative approach and a wealth of imagination. I respect her very much, I appreciate her and I do not miss to visit the current exhibitions - revealed Karakashevska.
