Italy's support for the European integration of Northern Macedonia, enlargement is crucial for the region and Europe

Italy is an important political and economic partner of Northern Macedonia, and the achieved results of our country on the path of European integration should have an appropriate end with the immediate opening of accession negotiations.

These were the main points from yesterday's meeting between Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski and his Italian counterpart Mario Draghi, which took place during the two-day visit of the Macedonian delegation to Rome on the occasion of May 24 - the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius.

Both prime ministers were adamant that European Union enlargement was key to the region and Europe's prosperity.

After the meeting, Prime Minister Kovacevski said that we have strong and consistent support from Italy for the EU integration process.

According to the government press service, the two prime ministers agreed that EU enlargement should be viewed from a geopolitical point of view, as a security issue crucial for the stability and prosperity of the entire region and Europe.

It was emphasized that the EU should recognize the moment and take into account the fact that Northern Macedonia condemned the war in Ukraine and fully aligned itself with the EU foreign policy, as true and credible partners, sharing the same values ​​of a free and democratic world. .

Prime Minister Kovachevski, who led the Macedonian delegation on the occasion of the Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, also met with Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, after which he said that talks between the expert teams of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs continue and when there is some progress then announced at ministerial level.

- The meeting was also used for a conversation related to the need to continue the dialogue to unblock the process of opening negotiations between Northern Macedonia and the EU. In a conversation with Prime Minister Petkov, Prime Minister Kovacevski stressed that the greatest benefit for both countries is to unlock the accession process with solutions based on European values ​​supported and accepted by both parties while respecting the dignity of citizens, the government press service said after the meeting.

Yesterday, as part of the celebration of the Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the Macedonian delegation paid tribute in front of the tomb of St. Cyril in the Basilica of San Clemente.

During the meeting, the role of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius was emphasized, who with their mission spread Christianity in a language understandable to the Slavic peoples and performed the mission of connecting the peoples of Europe. Northern Macedonia and the Vatican, since the establishment of diplomatic relations 28 years ago with commitment and mutual respect building friendship based on common historical, cultural and religious traditions and important figures such as Saints Cyril and Methodius and Holy Mother Teresa, was emphasized at the meeting.

The Prime Minister Kovacevski, together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Bujar Osmani had a meeting with the Secretary of State of the Holy See Pietro Parolin and the Secretary of State for Relations Paul Richard Gallagher, where it was emphasized that the diplomatic relations between Northern Macedonia and the Vatican are continuously developing. level of mutual trust, understanding and friendship.

The program in honor of the Day of the All-Slavic educators Saints Cyril and Methodius, on Monday was completed with the laying of a wreath on the memorial plaque in Macedonian in the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

In the cultural and artistic part, on Monday in the "Baldini" hall in Rome was held the concert of the renowned tenor Blagoj Nacoski, who performed with the pianist Alessandro D'Agostini.

State delegations from the country traditionally pay homage to the Day of the All-Slavic Enlighteners in Rome and the Vatican every year.
