The first president of Ukraine, Leonid Kravchuk, has died
Ukraine's first president dies today after a long illness Leonid Kravchuk, Ukrainian media report. Born on January 10, 1934, Leonid Kravchuk was President of Ukraine from 1991 to 1994, and later served as a politician from 1994 to 2006, as a member of the Verkhovna Rada, the Supreme Soviet of Ukraine.
Kravchuk died at the age of 88.
He signed the Lisbon Protocol in 1992, along with Belarus and Kazakhstan, urging former Soviet states to give up their nuclear arsenals.
From July 28, 2020 to February 2022, Leonid Kravchuk represented Ukraine in the Trilateral Contact Group, which aimed to establish a diplomatic solution to the war in the Donbas region of Ukraine.
He was the first president of Ukraine after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
