Russia has said it will evacuate hundreds of children from villages in the border region of Belgorod due to increased shelling, where the situation has been assessed as "alarming" by the Kremlin.

Russia has registered intense attacks on its soil over the course of a year in its campaign in Ukraine, with an attack last week in the southern Belgorod region and a drone attack on Moscow yesterday.

"Today we are starting to evacuate children from Shebekino and Graivoron districts," regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Telegram, which are the most affected border areas.

The governor said the first 300 children would be taken to Voronezh, a city about 250 kilometers away in Russia, Western media reported.
