Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has told the head of the Ukrainian National Guard to purge his ranks of those who discredit him after two members of the guard were charged with plotting to assassinate their superiors.

The state security agency SBU announced last month that it had detained two Guards colonels who allegedly collaborated with Russia in a plot to assassinate Zelensky and other officials, including the head of the military intelligence agency Kirill Budanov. The Ukrainian Guard protects various government officials.

Representing Colonel Oleksiy Morozov, Zelensky said today that his main task is to ensure that only those who see a future with Ukraine can join the agency. It was his first indirect statement on the subject since the agents were arrested.

"And, of course, the agency must be purged of all those who did not choose Ukraine for themselves or discredited the National Guard," he wrote on Telegram.

Zelensky fired Morozov's predecessor, Serhii Rud, in May, two days after the SBU arrested its employees accused of working for the Russian security service and providing it with classified information.
