In order to sever ties with the colonial past, Barbados became a republic on the 55th anniversary of its independence on November 30, ending the post of head of state of British Queen Elizabeth II on the Caribbean island.

The commission of the Government of Barbados twenty years ago proposed a change in the form of government, and everything accelerated last year, marked by the movement "The lives of blacks are important", reports the Guardian.

On September 15, 2020, the Government of Barbados announced that the Caribbean Island would become a republic by November 30, 2021, the 55th anniversary of independence, reversing the hereditary royal title of President.

Barbados, on the other hand, remains a member of the Commonwealth, a loose alliance between the United Kingdom and the former British colonies.

At the official ceremony, which will be attended by the Prince of Wales, Charles, Governor General Sandra Mason will be sworn in as president, whose term will last four years.
According to the British newspaper, the rejection of the British crown is part of a broader campaign that includes strengthening ties with the African peoples, from whom the majority of Barbados are native.

Citizens are demanding that the British government pay compensation for its historic crimes.

The "sugar revolution" of the 17th century, which made England extremely rich, was built on the backs of enslaved Africans taken to work on plantations in Barbados and other Caribbean islands.

Defined under British law as property, men, women and children working in the sugar fields were exposed to unimaginable brutality.

A study of the biological remains of slaves in Barbados found that their average lifespan was 18 years.
